We had so much fun during color day on Tuesday. The teams (yellow, red, and blue) we all so supportive. We heard cheering and encouragement as we enjoyed the activities together. Even members from different color teams were cheering on their friends. (Photos below) Can you believe we only have 7 days until the summer break? We have accomplished so much this year. We can't believe we can almost call these kiddos 4th graders! This week students also watched the 5th grade concert and participated in the Marshmallow Structure Challenge. Some students also dressed up in their favorite costumes or outfits for dress up day. Others chose to also wear their PJs for pajama day. All of these events are a great way to wrap up the year. This week was also Ms. Merrell's birthday! She shared some of her childhood memories with us. We learned she once lived in Italy and France. She also traveled around the countries with her family for months. We also learned that she was able to experience a different kind of school. Her classroom consisted of learning through nature and knowing this is so interesting. Her school teachers explored and learned outside a lot. Math:

During Art class this week students glazed their pinch pots. During Library this week students listened and watched a read aloud. The book was called Here Comes the Garbage Barge by Johan Winter. The book was about a strange occurrence. In the 1980s, a barge full of Long Island's trash departed on a journey of disposal. 3,2,00 bags of garage left the harbor because at this time Long Island's landfills were overflowing and polluting the groundwater. Local government had to think of a plan of disposal and they made an agreement with the south to dispose of their trash. Little did they know that they would soon be denied docking rights to various placed in the south. They traveled for over 6 months to areas in the south trying to find someone to take their trash. This book was a fictionalized story of a true event in history. The characters and events were created for humor but the moral of the story taught us that recycling was very important. Recycling lessens the trash amount and is better for the environment. Upcoming Events:

This week we have started learning about a few new things and also have continued learning more about concepts we started in the weeks prior. Our first Math MCAS session was on Thursday and the students were all focused and ready. The day before the test students wrote positive quotes on sentence strips to motivate themselves and their classmates. It is a tradition that we have continued since our first ELA MCAS. Writing these quotes has helped us build a community of learners that can start their testing days with a positive mindset. Math:

We still were able to get a lot finished in our busy schedules. The weather also made it easy to stay focused for the first part of the week. Seeing the sun again was so uplifting. This week we had a presentation from Barbara Johnson called "Understanding Your Differences." It focused on people who are hard of hearing. The presentation discussed ways in which to be respectful and helpful to the needs of others. It also taught us that when we do interact with people who may not hear as well we should speak slowly and clearly. We should also look at the person we are talking to. There are many ways to communicate and learning these news ways helps us acknowledge everyone's differences. Learning how to lip read, use assertive technologies, and sign language can be helpful tools. We also had a presentation from the Massachusetts Audubon Society about wood frogs and spadefoot toads. During the presentation, the students learned about the life cycle of these frogs. The students also learned about how they live and where they live. This week in Math:

Class Photos:This week students came back from a restful April vacation. We got right back to work will full focus. Everyone was excited to see Ms. Drouin or should we say Mrs. Accorsini! Our class decided to have a "Welcome Back," conversation so Mrs. Accorsini could tell us the details of her amazing day. Just in case you didn't know. . . She got married! After our conversation we got back to business. Here are a few things we learned: In Math:

Ms. Merrell also started a "bird watching," club with our class. During recess, (weather permitting) students can ask to use binoculars to look for birds. She also handed out journals so the students could take notes and observations of what they saw. Students from the other classes are also welcomed to join upon request. A few students from the other 3rd grade classes heard about this and joined the last observational group. This week students performed during the Multicultural day event. Families were able to come and visit. The students did a great job dancing, singing, and playing the recorder. In Math:

After-school on Tuesday some students set off their volcano projects! Here are some class moments: Ms. Drouin also is getting married over April Break! The kids made her some gifts during Art.
This week we had an author named Suzy Kline come to visit. She is the author of the "Horrible Harry," series. She was so engaging with the students and taught us one special lesson, "Never leave the house without a small notebook and pencil!" She said that in order to become a writer you need to practice writing. When you are out in the world you might think of a great idea that could be a SEED for a story. These ideas can help you create wonderful stories. EXPERIENCES are what bring your writing to life. Suzy Kline called a few teachers to the front of the cafe to perform what we call "Reader's Theater." The teachers were assigned parts from one of her books and they read through the lines as if they were making the text come alive. There was a "teacher and a few students in the scene." The 3rd grade students at Franklin thought it was hilarious. Students also completed their ELA MCAS sections this week! They were so positive and really focused. We wrote inspirations quotes the day before we started. In Math:
We also learned about Multiples of numbers. . . 3, 6, 9, 12 . . . In Literacy/Writing:

During Library students made their own POEMS. Last week students were inspired by poems and decided to write their own poems during independent times. We forgot to post them so here they are . . .
